Academics

The Department of Chemistry established in September 1963 has a renowned faculty actively engaged in research areas such as Solid State & Nano-materials, Biochemistry, Computational Chemistry, and Synthetic Chemistry. The Department has  thirty four distinguished faculties trained at renowned Institutes in India and abroad. In addition, the Department is supported by a dedicated team of staff members. One of our key objectives is to create good quality human resource. The Department offers a two years M.Sc programme, a two years M.Tech programme and a Ph.D programme. Doctoral and postdoctoral research are carried out in all major areas of chemistry and allied sciences. The Department is adequately equipped with state-of-art analytical facilities to carry out modern day chemistry.

Doctoral program (Ph. D.) Code: CYZ

The department of Chemistry at IIT Delhi provides an excellent opportunity to carry out graduate research work in multidisciplinary research areas (check https://chemistry.iitd.ac.in/ongoing-research). Students having M.Sc./M Tech (M. Sc. in Chemistry/Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Life Sciences/Material Science) can apply to this program. There are various fellowship options - (i) institute-funded Ph. D. (see details here), and (ii) CSIR/UGC/INSPIRE fellowships (see details here) students can avail for their graduate studies and research. Further details of the eligibility criteria can be found on the institute's website.

Masters of Science (M. Sc. Chemistry) Code: CYS

The Four-Semester Master of Science in Chemistry is designed to provide broad-based training in physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry. Courses in biochemistry and analytical chemistry are also included in the core program. Students are offered a choice of electives in various specialized areas like solid state chemistry, organometallic chemistry, statistical mechanics, bioorganic chemistry, and immunochemistry. Students are required to also take two electives from outside the department. The project in the second year initiates the students into research work in various branches of Chemistry.

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (BS Chemistry) Code: CY

The prevailing challenges in higher education, including a rigid separation of disciplines with early specialization and streaming of students into narrow area of study, limited teachers and Institutional autonomy, lesser emphasis on research at most universities and colleges, large affiliating universities have resulted in lower standards of UG education in the country. Consequently, the Chemistry Department at IIT Delhi provides a flexible and multifaceted undergraduate program that empower students to learn, fostering skills and master the subject in-depth for taking up high quality research later in their careers. Simultaneously, the program provide a broad perspective training students to employ chemistry-based approaches for solving real world problems by developing newer technologies.

India currently lacks an early education program that adequately prepares the individual for tackling chemical sciences problems in technology development. While many universities offer undergraduate programs in chemical sciences, they often lack a technology-driven curriculum and fails to provide flexibility or opportunities for choosing disciplines at the interface of chemical science and technology. Conversely, the engineering training primarily focuses on teaching chemistry that is exclusive to the subject (such as in chemical engineering or biochemical engineering etc.) and lacks depth or breadth in chemical sciences required to tackle advanced technological problems or needed to cross the bridge from engineering to pure sciences later.
