From Electrocatalysts to Solar Absorbers: Exploring the Properties of Perovskite Oxide Materials

Perovskite oxides, with a general formula of ABO3, encompass a large a family of compounds which have been studies in a variety of fields including heterogeneous catalysis, water electrolysers, fuel cells, water remediation, batteries, supercapacitors, photovoltaics, and even superconductivity. This broad space of applications reveals how compositional changes in this structural motif can have profound effect in their electronic properties. Are there any effective guiding principles that could predict whether a perovskite could be a good electrocatalysts (for electrolysers, fuel cell, metal-air batteries) or a good solar absorber (PV, photocatalysts, solar fuels)? In this seminar, I will attempt to address this question by establishing correlations between the electronic structure of a range of lanthanides and their electrocatalytic activity.[1-3] In the second part, I will examine a variety of ferrite perovskites, highlighting how their electronic properties can be exploited in PV and solar fuels applications.[4-7] I will further highlight some of the challenges associated with predicting the electrochemical properties of this strong electron correlated materials and future research directions.
